What it is

Glutathione is the most abundant intracellular thiol antioxidant. Oral GSH absorbs poorly, which is why clinical use favors IV, IM, or nebulized routes. Aesthetic clinics popularized IV glutathione for skin-lightening, though the FDA has flagged unapproved injectable preparations as a safety concern.

Mechanism

Endogenous tripeptide (glutamate-cysteine-glycine) and the body's master intracellular antioxidant. Cofactor for glutathione peroxidase and Phase II liver detoxification.

Outcomes it's matched to
Safety

Generally well tolerated. Rare cases of Stevens-Johnson syndrome and thyroid dysfunction reported with chronic IV use.

  • Sulfa allergy (caution)
  • Active asthma (inhaled form)
Legal context

Injectable glutathione is unapproved by FDA for skin-lightening. Compounding pharmacies may dispense by Rx.
